Microstimulation of Precentral Cortex with Chronically Implanted Microelectrodes

Abstract

Parylene, a vapor-deposited polymer, has been used to insulate metal microelectrodes used for both acute and chronic experiments. These electrodes have been used to record from or to stimulate neurons in the central and peripheral nervous system. Properly deposited Parylene insulation on microelectrodes can withstand several years of implantation, and the material appears to produce minimal tissue reaction. Parylene is a promising insulator for microelectrodes intended for chronic implantation in the brain.
